What’s your best supplement for improving iron levels?
Our best supplement to support iron levels is the Beef Liver. It contains heme iron, which is much more readily absorbed and utilised by the body than non-heme iron found in a lot of traditional supplements and plant sources. A 6-capsule serving gives over 10% of the RDA for men, and almost 10% of the RDA for women, as well as very high levels of vitamin B12. If your B12 levels are low, this can have a big impact on iron, so having both of these nutrients together in their natural form is preferable to taking an isolated supplement and can be much more helpful.
What’s your best supplement for b12?
Our best products for vitamin B12 are our Beef Organs and Beef Liver. These both contain a high amount of vitamin B12 in a very bioavailable form. These supplements also contain vitamin B9 and iron, which are important for B12 utilisation too.
Your choice just depends upon your goals - for men we often recommend the Beef Organs as they contain specific nutrients beneficial for heart health, which mostly affects males, whilst many women get on very well with the Beef Liver.
For reference, a full serving (6 capsules) of liver gives you 10.647mcg of B12, which is 463% of the RDA for men and women. The organs gives you 6.7mcg per serving, which is 293% of the RDA for men and women. So, as you can see, the Beef Liver has higher levels, but both are very effective!
Beef Organs and Histamine Intolerance
Beef organs are actually very high Ibn DAO, which is needed to break down histamine and deal with histamine intolerance - kidney is particularly high in it, and our beef organs are made with kidney, heart and liver. Beef organs are also very unlikely to raise histamine levels, so they should be fine to take.
That said, if you are concerned, please do speak with a healthcare provider before taking, as everyone is different and has different reactions to certain foods.
We also had this review regarding histamine intolerance: “I bought these hoping for an overall boost, and as nutritional support when I don't have access to fresh organs. However, I've found they also serve as an anti-histamine support! After realising I have histamine issues I did some research on whole food support, to find that beef organs have DAO, an enzyme necessary for the production of the body's own anti-histamine response. I hadn't opened the bottle before learning this, because I wanted to try some other supplements on their own first. Now I have taken two capsules with every meal for a couple of weeks, and notice a huge difference - if I forget, I notice while I am eating or shortly thereafter. I am thrilled to have found a whole food ally for these specific issues, and excited to see what else it can support in my body!”
Do any of your products contain palm oil?
All our products are 100% palm oil free.
I can't decide whether to get beef liver or mixed organs- which do you recommend?
It depends on your specific requirements really... the Beef Organs contain a wider variety of micronutrients including some more unique nutrients like Selenium (great for immunity and thyroid function) and CoQ10, which is great for cardiovascular health. Whereas the Beef Liver contains less of a variety but the nutrients it does contain (Vitamin A, all the B vitamins, copper, etc) are in a greater density.
Personally I usually opt for the Beef Organs as I have a history of poor heart health in my family and I generally recommend this to men over the Beef Liver as they need more heart support. Whereas for women I usually recommend the Beef Liver. That said, it might be worth trialing one and then the other and seeing which works best for you.
Can you take liver capsules during pregnancy?
Every body is different and every pregnancy is different, so when it comes to delicate situations like this, we like to refer to the experts. Registered Dietician/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, research, and author Lily Nichols, in her book "Real Food for Pregnancy: the science and wisdom of optimal prenatal nutrition says "Liver is one of the richest food sources of folate and vitamin B12, both key in maintaining healthy red blood cells and fostering healthy brain development in your baby. Many of you reading this may have been specifically warned NOT to consume liver during pregnancy, precisely because it is rich in vitamin A...However, we now know that naturally occurring vitamin A does NOT exert toxicity, particularly when consumed with adequate vitamin D and vitamin K2, nutrients that are also found in abundance in liver. This illustrates perfecting why obtaining nutrients from food is far safer than getting them from supplements". (p. 33-34).
She goes on to say "liver and supplements are not equivalent...Advice to pregnant women on the consumption of liver based on the reported Vitamin A toxicity supplements, should be reconsidered" (p.34).
Finally, Lily states " when buying liver, remember that source matters. This organ is designed to filter toxins and store nutrients, so ideally, seek liver from healthy, pasture-raised animals. If you're especially averse to the taste, you can purchase desiccated liver from grass-fed cows in capsule form and take it as a supplement" (p.35)
Can you stack multiple products together?
Yes, you can stack as many of our products together as you like in a variety of combinations. For example, personally I take Lion's Mane and Cordyceps either as powders mixed into my coffee with Collagen and MCT Oil or as our Dawn capsules in the morning. I then take Optimised Male with breakfast and our Celtic Oysters & Whole Bone Matrix mid-morning. I'll usually eat organs with lunch, but if I don't I'll include a serving of our Beef Organs or Beef Liver. The only potential exception to this is when it comes to stacking more than two Nose-to-Tail products together.
Generally we recommend people stack two Nose-to-Tail products daily if they really want to maximise nutrient intake when they don't eat organ meat. This is based on Western A Price's guideline to eat one ounce (28 grams) of liver per day. We use around 15 grams of raw organs to make each serving of our products (6 capsules) so taking 12 per day would bring you in at just over that guideline at 210 grams per week.
That said, I know quite a few people who take or eat more than this (including me) and only notice increased benefits, especially when you're taking a variety of the products and therefore a wider range of micronutrients. However, if you want to air on the side of caution to not overload on micronutrients, I would suggest taking no more than 12 organ meat capsules per day.
