Have you noticed your weekly shop hitting harder than it used to?
Specifically… the beef aisle?
Beef prices are up 26.3% this year, and now, predictably, people are buying less of it. Basically, the system priced everyday Brits out of quality meat, and people are RIGHTLY asking questions.
Here’s what’s happening…
There’s a 5% shortfall in cattle on UK land, combined with a 1% rise in consumer demand - and that combination is what’s really driving prices through the roof.
But this isn’t anything new…
Sadly, the GB cattle herd has been shrinking for TEN YEARS straight according to a 2025 analysis by The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
Traditional beef farmers are being crushed by rising costs and a government that slashed their direct payments. So fewer are farming, and the ones that remain can't keep up with demand.
That's the real story behind your expensive mince.
And of course, supermarkets are just taking the easy way out.
Morrisons… Asda… Sainsbury's… They’re all turning to Australian imported beef to plug the gap.
Now you might be thinking, “Isn’t Aussie beef legit?”
Yes!
And here’s what makes this DOUBLY frustrating…
Australia are world leaders when it comes to organic cattle farms and regenerative practices. We’re talking 53 million hectares (FIFTY. THREE. MILLION!) dedicated to organic farming and providing 70% of organic farming globally.
HOWEVER, to cut corners, supermarkets are opting for the lowest quality cattle they can find… Like in most places, there is also widespread use of feedlots in Australia with horribly low animal welfare ratings according to the RSPCA.
Unnatural diets. Animals living stressed, confined lives - routinely pumped with antibiotics just to survive the conditions they're kept in.
This is the most ANNOYING part about the whole thing.
Supermarkets had a golden opportunity to go for high quality, well raised beef… Instead, they chose to stock the cheapest industrial beef they could get their hands on, slap a fancy label on it, and call it a day because it keeps margins nice n’ fat like a grain fed cow!
But that is where we, the consumers, come in…
See every time you buy from a supermarket stocking industrial feedlot beef, you're voting for more of the same.
More corner cutting. More compromised welfare. More of this cycle.
You get better quality food, raised properly and your money goes to the people actually doing things right.
Bottom line…
When you swap a well-raised, grass-fed animal for one raised in a feedlot, you're not just accepting an inferior product…
You're saying no to nutritional quality.
Welfare standards. Traceability.
The healing of soil and ecosystems.
Above all though, you’re saying you’re ok with it all, which signals to the big players they can get away with it.
So, the choice is yours:
A flat-pack steak from a feedlot in Queensland.
Or…
Supporting raising beef the way it should be.
Choose wisely,
